helsinkis lauri saine is the storyteller for this, the third chapter of fools & fables. pleasingly his irresistible releases dont come along all that often, but when they do, they justifiably make serious waves. small remedies, takes us on a journey to a side of saine we seldom see. first things first, blush cuts a breezy, cheerful path through a warm analogue space, with the mid-tempo throb of sampled rhythms to keep you from drifting too far off course. casual wears altogether looser pants as we just bob to and fro in a hammock while rum-soaked session players jam away in a distant speakeasy. the tropical breeze blows free through leisure song too, as we begin to get the impression finland might actually be a small pacific island.

conor (no way back, sf, ca) conors an extremely influential, yet somewhat mysterious figure in sfs disco and house underground. its known that he has an enviable collection of disco on wax, that hes not afraid to use it, yet no one seems to know if he sleeps, or where his bed is, or if perhaps he just lies down among record crates with one eye open, scanning his vinyl collection…. in any case, the guy knows what hes doing. along with sfs solar, hes booked, hosted, and played alongside a long list of the worlds best underground electronic, house, and disco artists at his party series no way back, and his taste and talent for curating artists, and selecting records, is widely acknowledged to be some of the best around

high mobility weapons unit sets off from an unknown location on earth, making its maiden voyage beyond our solar system and towards a distant galaxy. the transverse velocity ep is the debut release on the self-titled imprint, serving up four original tracks that are heavily influenced by mechanical cycles and deep space concepts. the a-side kicks off with the eps title track transverse velocity, where an array of eroded satellite bleeps and waves loop together as the analogue low-end pulsates rhythmically below. in wave 102 the bleeps are detuned and erratically timed, with a glitchy tape delay unit modulating them throughout the track. the saturated 808 kick drum and processed percussion are given a functional structure, allowing the bleeps to take centre stage. on the b-side, both cycle 01 and astronomy tool serve as stripped-back percussive dj tools. cycle 01 rolls along with its hollow, muted polyrhythmic stab line, whilst astronomy tool drives forward with an effective, crystalline synth hit. mastered by black monolith studios.

this 12inch is pure trance. who is/are rita furstenhof? we have no idea who she/he/they are. the a1 track, the mighty -hadron collider- was sent to optimo music hq about 18 months ago. normally sending one track is not much use to a label, but this was so good that we instantly replied to say we wanted to release it. rita furstenhof works in mysterious ways, and it was 18 months until the other tracks for the ep arrived. along the way there were a few times when we thought they had completely vanished, and we were never going to have a complete ep, but finally, here it is.

over two decades ago, roland leesker would play and produce with artists that are legends today. slaving away with ricardo villalobos in his living room, creating loops with john selway at new york s satellite basement, working as a light jockey for joe jam and marc spoon, cooking the heat together with cajmere and ata at the wild pitch club, or running various record shops around the globe. since then, he’s invested much of his time, knowledge, heart and soul into electronic music to further the scene and support the art. now, he’s returned to the studio with his production partner philipp maier also known as sante to bring you a new instant classic, ‘my warehouse’ in a way, you could say ‘my warehouse’ has been in the making for 25 years. in that time roland leesker has studied the music, gathering inspiration from the sounds, people and experiences along the way and putting them all together to create his perfect sound. ‘my warehouse’ is a bass-laden house killer, with intense kicks and a gritty, in-your-face bassline.

since 2010, jackie house aka jacob sperber has been driving the a&r side of the san francisco dance-music troupe running the hnytrx label and producing remixes with other members under the honey name. putting label duties on hold in 2013 sperber cocooned into his music studio, entering as a brave brunette and exiting as an ambitious blonde. * stydive * is jackie s debut to wax and has as much house-party in it as it does warehouse 4am. with a vocal sample nod to punk s past, * stydive* pogo dances to dusty and stuttering live/analog drum rhythms and skips along a rude and infectious bass-line. bound to find lovers of all persuasions for its dub-esque qualities, instantly recognizable hook, and open relationship with house music, this tune begged to have it s own side. that said, there is always room for some matrixxman who takes stydive to a strobe lit south of market darkroom in his remix on the b. spurting erotic lazers around a cavernous kick, this tune finishes off even the most experienced edger.

over the past years bézier has seen releases under the dark entries record imprint with the most recent telomeres ep this year. the title track &#30342,,,, or pronounced * mina* translates from japanese to * everyone*. mina is a journey through space with the initial ascent marked by a moody window of time in which uncertainty dominates the mindset of the passengers. once they break through the atmosphere and are proceeding as planned they land on the final destination, an interplanetary discotheque. mina was recorded this year with mark pistel on the helms for mixing and features sf drummer kevin woodruff of tussle fame providing live drumming for the last portion of the track. along with the title track the b-side includes tracks previously released on compilations but appear here for maximum record playing enjoyment. * serengeti drive* which appeared on honey soundsystems earlier hnytrx compilation of queer dancefloor artists is the slow burner of the group. * mysteries of the deep* which appeared in the jacktone cassette compilation of bay area electronic stars is the soundtrack to an underwater expedition. both tracks were recorded, produced and mixed by robert in his home sf studio in 2009.

the mysterious talent antenna shows his tough, high impact house sound for his second release on the dutch pinkman label. first up, ‘childhood’ is a mid tempo bit of elastic, groove driven house with whirring machines, raw synth patterns and filtered, muffled vocals. hi hats add an incendiary element of pressure but really this one is all about the pinging, rubbery drums that flail like drunken limbs. ‘when i read my book’ is another purposeful offering riddled with melody and deep drums, slapping claps and lots of jittery cow bells, impish synth sounds and bass kills that brings a real sense of energy to proceedings. lastly, ‘in august’ is a tripped out cut with skipping kick drums, celestial and heavenly, glassy melodies and skittish percussion that all glide along in alluring and off kilter fashion. this is house music, but not as you know it!

punctual is a stripped back, bleepy warehouse machine that hits hard but is versatile and funky. remix duties are taken care of by alex under from spain. after patrick s 12 on alex s cmyk musik it was time to invite alex into his community and alex delivered big time. alex refines the main ideas in the track, boiling it down to a solid groove and adding a killer bass riff that sounds like it was meant to be there all along.

* run along*, the eps vinyl only track is a superbly quirky roller and shows a side of the artist we ve yet to see with a melancholic and thoughtful streak imbuing proceedings.

we find it slightly hard to believe that it s been three years since blocks and escher launched narratives music with their explorative *sagan / broken* 12-inch. unafraid to stray from its drum & bass roots, the label has since become synonymous with encapsulating, poignant, cutting-edge music. favouring quality over quantity, blocks and escher have kept the narratives release schedule sparse, only now hitting the big 1-0. along with the founders, only overlook, asc, loxy & resound and rhyming in fives have had their names tied to the label, and it s the latter who returns now for the tenth release.
first surfacing in 2013 with the hindsight ep, rhyming in fives remains enigmatic to say the least. little to nothing is known about the producer, and aside from a free download that dropped last week via mixmag, the new 4-track light leaks ep is only the second offering ever from the mysterious musician.

young french talents kitkalt present their work on the labels 94.5 th release. kraft oddity ep is a mesmerizing display of production skills and a testament to the duos true understanding of techno-hypnosis. pushing from the start with urgent bass lines, chord combinations all the tracks build and morph with its intertwining elements, introducing subtle textures and suggestions of melody. a debut release with powerhouse percussion along with a textured techno-stabs in this straight-up club trip.

up and coming belgium-born activist philippe petit, operator of the knotweed and decision making theory labels, returns to figure spc with a delightfully versatile four tracker. spanning cold-wavesynth electronics, purist club techno and up-building melodic zones, its perhaps petits strongest effort yet. capturing a neo-classical, archaic mood in >mist<, philippe works stunning cyclic synth themes along with tactile filtering drum patterns. >solaris< and >negative zone< then both work stand-out tracky, trippy elements into two killer club weapons, showing off the frenchmans studio skills. the lighter footprint of >suspended< closes the ep with a joyful, above the clouds journey, lifting up weightlessly into the ether.

the ”sound dig series” returns with the same spirit of collaboration and distinctive sound that set it apart from the compilation fray. this time around the familial gathering features, introspective, jay mond, sean bird &wallflower, along for the ride in part 1 of the vinyl version of this series.

machines will fail us: those are the unsettling first words of this much expected new episode of the polar inertia odyssey. starting with this ode to machinery, the tale plunges suddenly in a stark apocalyptic scenario. along the 3:14? of the track kinematic optics, this mysterious polar inertia eventually begins to materialize and reveal more of its true essence. same might be said about this double ep, consisting of almost 75 minutes of music.

one of the uks most enigmatic bootleg labels returns for its fourth installment of dancefloor bombs and feel good hits. following the trail blazed by early bootleg pioneers such as ron hardy and john morales, boogiefuturo presents two instant classics for the edits hall of fame. * give me some emotion* features an expertly amped-up sample of a particularly well-known female vocalist (we don’t want to give too much away now). jamie bull’s edit respectfully takes the track into the 21st century, with solid, punchy drums and big room snare reverbs to support the original boogie funk synth lines and staccato guitars. sing along vocals and catchy hooks make this a fine addition to any vinyl junkie’s record bag. ‘lovin’ spree’ continues the boogifuturo tradition of tasteful edits. neil diablo loops an infectious guitar hook with the addition of low growling synths and rhodes keys, to build the track into a crescendo timeless disco strings, chant-along vocals and killer sax solos. an underground classic on the disco scene but never reaching the heights of commercial success, diablo presents an edit to give this forgotten record new life. boogiefuturo is vinyl only and strictly underground, this won’t be played out by everyone – this one is for the purists, the vinyl addicts, the one’s that reminisce over the days when the white label ruled…

standing beyond just todays current trends, eyetone has quietly gone about its business of releasing music with substance and picking up support along the way from some of the finest selectors in the business. doc martin, craig richards, sasha, evil eddie richards and honey dijon to name a few.

final chapter was started in 2013 by stockholm s sean dixon, along with support from perseus traxx. a label which is happy to let the music do the talking, final chapter is now on it s fifth release, and shows no sign of being prepared to letting the book close. the journey of detroit and chicago influenced house and techno continues on this release as label head sean dixon presents an ep split between himself and boston s john barera, who s previous releases outside of his own label, supply records, have issues fourth on soul clap and dolly, as well as steffis panorama bar mix cd on ostgut ton. remix duties come courtesy of berlin based producer, palms trax, who s first outing was in 2013 on lobster theramin.

first single from the sly johnson new album the mic buddah. after enjoying success and platinum discs with hip hop french band saïan supa crew in the early 2000s, sly johnson released an album on universal jazz as a soul singer along his carreer of beatbox virtuos

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and “africa calling”. the first version, created to donnell’s much loved “spirit man” alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada’a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it’s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.

systematic recordings celebrates its tenth anniversary and decided to release only special vinyl pressings during this year. the already second part of marc romboys series is therefor also a collectors item and comes along in form of a solid white vinyl. both tracks, the melodic simi and the tracky bylgja have been featured at romboys and bodzins buzz causing be-at-tv show at village underground in london last december!

delsins c-series, that has so far offered up excellently deep house from son.sine and raw sounds from gunnar haslam, now welcomes sven weisemann. known for his deep, atmospheric and cuddly house and dub, he draws on the heritage of detroit and chicago at the same time as imbuing tracks with his own sense of smoky, jazz infused soul. fall of icarus contains it all, heavenly pads accompanied by rasping basslines, blissful ambient chords, buried deep drum lines and beatless dub excursions. a slowly churning current drives things along as you are left suspended in the midst of it all and this one closes out another superlative ep from both delsin and weisemann.

two dubbed techno wonders on a coloured 7 platter. lars fenin, born and raised in hamburg has been around the music scene in berlin since the mid 90ties as reggae guitarist/songwriter/live-act/artist/producer/dj. his first experiments in electronic music started in 1998 with some friends in hamburg, followed two years later by his first ep release called &#8243,,,,,herr pitzelberger dreht auf” for the berlin based label shitkatapult. since then fenin has released several eps and albums for his homies shitkatapult as well as 12&#8243,,,,,, s and remixes for labels like echocord, revolver, eintakt and mitek among others. along the years he could boast collaborations with artists such as deadbeat, mikael stavostrand, d-meteo, k.j. gibbs,horace andy, der dritte raum, eraldo bernocchi and jeff milligan. since 2008 he runs also his own label called dock-records. soundwise, fenins productions range from roots reggae/dub pieces to cordish/melodic techno sets and electronic alike soundscapes. the future is unwritten.

for bt05 koova brings 5 tracks of futuristic driving electro aimed at the dancefloor. as a solo artist, koova has released on respected labels abstract forms and ac records. he is also 1/3rd of london modular alliance along with pip williams and yes effect, who have been making serious waves with their all improvised live shows. 200 copies, screenprinting artwork unique to each copy, handstamped labels.

continuing to push that deep, raw house sound chris carrier s adult only label presents a brand new ep from slapfunk affiliate and all round funkateer, larry de kat. larry keeps the grooves rolling in his native holland, where he has close ties with the much respected slapfunk records, along with good friend anil aras. his back catalogue includes another french connection, with the young masters at lazare hoche records. this time he links up with prolific producer chris carrier to give adult only a taste of his funky medicine.
on side a we have ‘diks on gruds’, a gruff dance floor banger with a deadly bassline and ultra crisp hats, which inject a solid energy from start to finish. on the flip another french hero, phil weeks, add his stomping chicago flavour into the mix reworking the track with panache. a is ‘noodlez’, a quirky joint composed of odd sounds wriggling and whirring above a slinky bassline counterposed with choppy percussion. finally, the ep closes out with ‘um?’, a sombre affair which pumps and purrs with minimal composition – subtle effects in the arrangement bounce around the beats, while a mysterious voice creeps in and out of the background. sublime ...
